UCLA News, send Coach Wooden your love and prayers
On June 3, 2010, John Wooden was hospitalized in grave condition at UCLA Medical Center. In the late hours of of June 4 2010, his final fight ended. Please pray for the soul of this legend, as he has passed on. Remember this UCLA, and Basketball icon in your comments to this post. This life lesson mentor, teacher and Coach shall be greatly missed. John Robert Wooden (1910-2010).
He has taught greatness to many many young men. Without prejudice, and with great passion, this man can teach us all a little something about life.
UCLA’s basketball program has the international reputation of being No. 1. There is a major reason for that his name is John Robert Wooden, who announced his retirement after the 1974-75 season (his 27th campaign) as the Bruins’ head coach with the winningest record in all of the sport’s history. Wooden’s 100th birthday was approaching on Oct. 14, 2010.
Some of the players that you know that John coached are listed below. He met most all of them when they were hot-shot High School grads at the age of 18. He took each one into the UCLA locker room on the very first day and taught them his most important lesson first. Every ball player that worked under John must remember the day he got this lesson. I almost don’t want to tell you John’s secret, because you really need to read his book. OK, here goes: He taught them the proper way, by doing it himself, to put on socks and shoes. When someone tells you that they teach fundamentals, this man may not have invented it, but he really took it to the ninth level.
If you don’t have it, please get it THIS weekend! Wooden: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections on and Off the Court
